Who We Are
Engineering a heart, training the people who build it.
Alberta Heart is a student team at the University of Alberta designing and developing a Total Artificial Heart, turning classroom concepts into real prototypes and research.
We're 45 students from engineering, medicine, and science, organized into five subteams that each own a piece of the problem, from pump design and electronics to the clinical and business side of getting a device into the world.
Our Story
How we got here.
Alberta Heart began with five undergraduates who shared one idea: build a lasting, multidisciplinary biomedical club at the University of Alberta.
What started as a dream has grown into a large team across engineering, medicine, and science, united by collaboration, innovation, and a drive to learn by building something real.

At the intersection of engineering excellence and saving lives.
To work at the intersection of innovation and engineering excellence to develop and promote technologies associated with the Total Artificial Heart.
That goal breaks down into three things we work on every year:
- Develop: build a functioning Total Artificial Heart, and learn to find and fix failures early along the way.
- Partner: work with faculty, industry, and clinicians so the engineering stays clinically grounded.
- Grow: stay a sustainable club that keeps training new engineers and representing Edmonton and Canada on the world stage.
